What is a crossword?

An interlocking grid built from your own words and clues. The solver reads a clue, works out the answer, and the crossings confirm it.

How to make one

Write one entry per line in the form WORD : clue. The colon separates the answer from what the solver reads.
Twelve to twenty-five entries interlock comfortably. Fewer looks sparse; more and some words will not fit.
Generate. If a word is missing it did not fit — shorten the list or replace the longest word.
Set the cell size for your audience, then export as PDF or press Play to solve it on screen.

How to solve one

Start with the clues you are sure of, wherever they are. Every filled answer gives letters to the entries crossing it.
Count the squares before committing — the answer length is the strongest constraint you have.
A crossing letter you are confident about beats a whole answer you are guessing at.

The settings that matter

Cell size: Larger cells for children and for large print; the default fits a full grid on half a page.
Cell shape: How the squares are drawn. Cosmetic — pick what suits the sheet.

Questions

Why are some of my words missing from the grid?

They could not be placed. Long words need a long clear run, and a compact grid has few. Either shorten the list or swap the longest word for a shorter synonym.

What makes a good clue?

One that gives a way in other than already knowing the word. "Large grey mammal" is a definition; "It never forgets, apparently" is a clue. Both are fair — the second is remembered.

Can I control where words are placed?

Not in this generator — the engine finds an arrangement that interlocks. Pressing Generate again gives a different arrangement of the same words.

Do the clue numbers stay the same?

No. Numbering follows the grid, so it changes whenever you regenerate. Export the answer key in the same session as the puzzle.

Print it or play it

Export as a US Letter PDF for print, or as PNG/JPG for image-based layouts. Amazon KDP supports multiple trim sizes, including 8.5 × 11 inches for applicable books; build the final interior to the trim size you selected and keep raster artwork at 300 DPI. There is also a grid-only export if you are dropping the puzzle into your own page layout.
